Reached my stafford loan limit -- How can they Cancel my pell too?

will, where are you getting the 201 from? The first letter says 189…the second says 194. It looks like they added to your attempted hours after the adjustment!

It will be interesting to see what kelsmom says…I’m thinking that if you only had aid eligibility for a certain number of hours and you took Stafford loans for them, you effectively got all the “aid” you were entitled to once they also disbursed the remaining Pell grant.

Please double check.

Fall 10:
189 attempted + 12 enrolled = 201. Subtract from 204 = 3 remaining for Sp eligibility.

Spring 11:
Pre-Retroactive Drop:
201 attempted + 9 enrolled = 210. Subtracted from 204 = none remaining (6 over)

Post-Retroactive drop:
194 attempted + 9 enrolled = 203. Subtracted from 204 = 1 Remaining.

Or look at it this way if that doesn’t make sense.

In FA10 I had 189 hours attempted.
I took 12 hours and passed.
12 + 189 = 201.
But my SP11 Eligibility says 194 attempted…

How could one have attempted 189 hours, then attempt 12 more, and the result be 194?
189 + 12 != 194.

It’s a difference of 6 hours because of the retroactive drops.

I see, when you said you received the letter last fall, it seemed like it would have included whatever hours you were already registered for. None of this has anything to do with Stafford loan interest though…it sounds like you have just exceed the allowable hours under your school’s SAP policy.

Yeah the wording is terrible isn’t it? So yes, it includes the hours for the current term.

This issue is that, though I have 10 hours available, and I am taking 9 of those 10, I’m being given Pell for only 3, and told it’s because of the loans.

Your school has a really tight SAP policy (which is actually good, as the rules are changing & many schools are going to have to tighten their policies).

Where are you over on the Stafford loans? Is sub over $23,000? Or is combined over $57,500?

I’d forgotten that he started as an independent student…that’s a lot of debt for an undergrad! Kelsmom, is that the limit for total federal loans, or just for Staffords?

That is for Staffords. Many students also have Perkins on top of the Staffords.
