Hmm, I'm applying to college this year and was wondering if my list of colleges represents the diversity that should get me in the "safe zone"...

Reaches: lots.
MIT
HYPS (just for the heck of it)
Caltech
NYU
Brown
UPenn

Matches:
U Mich AArbor
UC Berkeley
CMU

Safeties:
SUNY Stony Brook

heck, it's a little top heavy, but if I apply to all, I should get into at least one.

Chinese female who's paranoid.
2390 SAT, okay ECs, good recs, paranoid essay, hardest scheduling available - approx. 8 APs when I graduate, and NM semifinalist.

Very into art and music, planning on submitting a portfolio...if they accept it...
Anime otaku, though that's completely irrelevant
Any other suggestions as to good match schools...or modifications to my application-ing-ing?

Majoring in Engineering and/or Comp Sci...

yeah, i know that's not a lot of information, but, who wants to read my life story?...

Only one percent of history is ever put into the textbooks.
The rest is boring.

NYU would me more of a match w/ a 2390 and a gpa of 3.8+ ... thats if you're applying to a school other than Tisch which is harder to get into because of the requirements, etc.

MCHYPS are all reaches simply as a result of being those schools. Those schools (MIT especially) turn down many students who they feel are "perfect matches" for MIT.

You applying early to any of these schools?

Noone is necessarily an "unworthy" applicant. You should never feel that way (unless you write your essays about cheating through class and kicking puppies in your free time).

In the end, we all know we want to go to MIT, it's up to us to convince MIT why we're good for each other.

It is relatively easy for me to convince other people of what you say, but difficult for me to convey the point to myself. Oh, I know what you are saying, I understand, I have been to too many forums, etc. - sadly, I am still nervous, but who would not be? Nope, my essay makes me look paranoid - MIT takes paranoid people, right?

I don't think that you need to apply to so many reaches. I think that you will probably be admitted to a number of your reaches, as well as to your matches and safety. Having so many reaches just makes no sense- they are very different schools. It just looks as if you are desperately going for any prestigious school if you do that.

Yes, there is that chance that i will be admitted to some.

But, I am doing this because there is also the chance that I won't. I want to leave my options open, as I learn more about a variety of schools. Keep my options open.

Mostly engineering schools...
MIT
Caltech..
Berkeley..
CMU...
Cornell...
Okay.
