Real cost of Reed without Financial Aid?

I'm trying to figure out just how steep the total cost of 4 years at Reed will be. The past few years, the increases in total cost that Reed estimated have been fairly reasonable - from 2006 through 2012 the annual increases were 5.2%, 4.7%, 3.7%, 4.6%, 2.8%, and 3.2%. (I found these from a web search - Reed itself doesn't have a cost history that I can find).

I know that no one has a crystal ball for how much the tuition or room/board will go up over 4 years, but what I'm wondering is what a typical real cost of books and personal expenses is. Reed hasn't increased their estimate for these items in 6 years! I have a hard time believing that Reed students will only have to pay $900/year for books, when other, less rigorous colleges are estimating twice that.

Any parents of current students that can give some ballpark figures?

Having Powells in town saves a lot on books. They often have used versions if you can’t find it used at the Reed bookstore. Also, the Reed bookstore often has very good prices on used books as well, as compared to some local schools where I have seen the used price actually exceed the original “new” price.
Portland can also be a good city for students. Public transportation is low cost and widespread. Reedies don’t shop at Nordstroms, instead they rummage through the Goodwill Outlet aka the Bins. Workstudy is usually enough to cover personal expenses plus books.

Are work study positions available to students that don’t qualify for financial aid? I thought that was tied to a financial aid award.

Let me amend it to, working 10 or so hours a week is enough to cover personal expenses & books.
