Middlebury waitlists kids who have the ability to succeed at Midd, but for whom there isn't enough space in the class. Some consider it to be a polite rejection, but last year more than 70 kids were taken from the waitlist (but the for the 2 years prior, no one was taken from the waitlist).

Arcadia--exactly how does that work? They said in the waitlist letter we should put more awards, etc. if you're still interested and all that, but would it be okay if I sent in something more, like a letter or an extra essay or something?
I got waitlisted and although I'm guessing I probably won't get the spot I'd at least like to try... but I don't want to annoy adcom. That wouldn't be too good.

They won't know until after May 1 if there is extra space in the class, so there is no need to rush things. I would prepare a thoughtful letter explaining why Midd is your first choice (and stressing that you would attend if admitted), and send it along with any other awards, good grades, artwork, etc.

In the end, it mostly depends on who doesn't attend and who does. For example, Midd needs individuals who play all the instruments needed for an orchestra (or voices for a choir, actors for plays, quaterbacks for football, people interested in astronomy, etc.). They admit one or two of each to ensure that the class is diverse and all needs are met. If both of the oboe players that were admitted decide not to attend, then they will need to look through those on the waitlist for another oboe player--one that they know will attend if offered a spot. What makes you unique at Midd? There must have been something that you had to offer for you to be placed on the waitlist. Find your hook and STRESS it in your letter to them.

I don't know if what you are saying is factual or not arcadia, but that is exactly my personal theory. Not only for middlebury, but for most private colleges, specially the small ones.

Another praise for Arcadia. I was fortunate to get accepted to many schools, and am going to send them all confirmations of my not-going as soon as I make my final decision. I'll probably note that I hope they would roll my spot to a waitlisted student. .

If Middlebury is a dream school for any waitlisters, go ahead and put yourself on the list. You will lose the deposit from your other school, but at least give yourselves a chance at Midd! You've come this far, don't lose hope yet. Best of luck to all.

800 Verbal 650 Math
790 US History; 780 Writing; 670 Math IC
3.8 GPA - Struggled frosh and soph with upward trend to 4.0 over the last couple of years
Really strong essays, really good recs (at least teachers', don't know about counselor's)
Decent writing sample (strong from an academic perspective, but very impersonal)
Fairly weak EC's
Fairly strong coursload, but lacking in foreign language (not a good thing for a Middlebury app)

Overall I'd say my lack of great EC's along with some deficiencies in my courseload kept me out. Plus I my GPA is pretty low for a school like this I think.

WHatever just need to get my Amherst rejection letter (my other top school) and end up somewhere I don't want to go.

Bayarea, do NOT worry about not getting into Amherst, or any other college! You have AMAZING stats and I'm sure that a lack of ECs at least shows that you had GREAT dedication in your academic life (especially for the upward trend! I wish that was my trend in my report card hehe). I'm sure you will in at Amherst--and if you don't, other colleges might not seem so bad. I mean heck, I got rejected by four colleges and waitlisted by five..... I was really upset at first (you have no idea), but whatever I do, I know in the long run I will be happy with whatever choice I make. :)

SO GOOD LUCK AND YOU WILL DO GREAT WHEREVER YOU GO (even if it's not your top choice)!!!!
