Realistic Chances of Admission

Hello. Realistically, what are my chances of admission? I am going to apply ED as I love William and Mary to death. It is my favorite school out of every one I have read about and visited, and the one school I feel I would be the best fit for personality wise. Also, I live in the midwest.

A bit about me academically:

-AP test US History 4

-interviewed at W&M

-AP Calculus AB

Extracurriculars:

-varsity indoor/outdoor Track and Field
-assistant to den leader for a Boy Scout troup

Are you in-state or out-of-state? Either way you have many competitive qualities but remember, the process is selective for all students but even more so for out-of-state students.

One recommendation we’d make is to take another AP during your senior year. We like to see students increase their rigor each year but you are taking the same number of APs your senior year as you did your junior year. Assuming more APs are offered we’d recommend AP Spanish or AP English. If however you are maxing out the AP offerings at your school then that’s fine.

Your ACT score is strong and well within our middle 50% range. If you’ve only taken it once, we would recommend taking it again this month or trying the SAT in October. If you’re out-of-state your score is on the lower end of our middle 50% range and because we take your best score it cannot hurt you to try again.

Applying ED is always a good idea if W&M is your top choice. Our applicant pool is much smaller so it’s easier for any student to shine.

As you prep your application, check out some of our recent Admit It! blogs (blogs.wm.edu/author/admiss) on the various application components (recommendation letters, essays, optional submissions, etc.) for more tipcs on how to make the most of your applications

Thank you for the advice. I am either going to take AP Gov or AP Micro or both next semester. Also, how much does WM consider extenuating circumstances, such as death/sickness in the family, unaccomadated learning disabilities, etc?

Any extenuating circumstances an applicant makes us aware of we take into consideration. They help us put your situation into context. That doesn’t mean that we ovelook subpar performance but it helps paint a fuller picture and contributes to our understanding of the applicant as a whole.
