My son has his sights set on UDEL and UDEL only. He has a 90 average, honors math,no AP"S. His SAT score is 1100/1600 1700/2400. He is OSS, his brother attends UDEL and so did his father. His brother advised him to try for an unpopular major to increase his chances. Is my son being unrealistic in believing he has a shot at this school?

I think he has a chance. His SATs are a bit low but his average may make up for that. A good essay and teacher recs would also help.

Do you think legacy will be enough to get him in despite being borderline? I know kids from his high school last year were rejected with better stats.

UDEL is one of my daughter’s top choices too. OOS. 92 GPA, 26 ACT. Mostly honors, 4 APs, good recs, ECs, community service. It seems that everyone loves this school and it’s getting more competitive. But when we visited, she said, “this is what a college should look like.” From what I’ve heard, they don’t look at intended majors bc so many students change so many times. She applied as undecided.

What do you think?

I think that it might depend on what state you’re applying from. For example, if you’re applying from NJ they will probably be more selective since they get an abundance of applications from that state. I am in NJ and there are about 100 students from my son’s HS that are applying out of a class of about 300.

Applying from NY. There are a ton of NYers there, but I don’t think a lot of applicants from our particular HS. I think one went there as a freshman this year. Also, we found out this week my D’s class rank - well within top 10%. Fingers crossed.

I would make sure you get everything in to Delaware ASAP.

D’s application to UDel (as well as nealy all her other apps) were submitted weeks ago. Now if I can only go to the HS and make sure the GC gets in the transcript, recs, etc., I would be happy. Wish we could do this all ourselves!!!

Turns out D’s class rank is 39/470 - better than I thought. Hope this will help her get into UDel and others.

Worrywart63: let me know how it goes with your S. Good luck!
