I’m a high school junior and I’m getting really nervous about college stuff. Honestly, I think my academics are pretty good but my ECs are a hot MESS. I have no idea what I’m really interested in (or what I’d want to major in) but I know that I really want to go to UT. I’m considering biology, business, or engineering as of now. Any advice on what to improve on or which route I should take based on my stats and whatever?

So that’s my mess of ECs, they’re completely unfocused and they’re really scaring me. I’m also prob going to apply to rice, baylor, a&m, etc so do I stand a chance??? (not to be annoying with the chance me stuff but im sorry) Which general major option should I go with based on my ECs? I’m so lost
also do colleges care if you apply for a major that you’ve never taken a high school class in? I’ve never taken engineering and I dropped comp sci bc I hated it but I take health sci now so would that be weird if I applied to engineering??
Are you a TX resident? If you are, talk to your GC about whether you are automatically accepted to UZy-Austin due to your class rank.
Selective Colleges want to see students who have taken the full variety of academic courses at a rigorous level. Not many Engineering courses offered at high school level and engineering students absolutely not expected to have taken any. A strong math curriculum is important. Good scores on the math exams —SAT and ACT.
Hi! ? I assumed since you did a debate camp on campus that you’re from Texas, so that would mean you would qualify for auto admission into the school (not your major). You listed some amazing accomplishments that you should be extremely proud of.
Being unsure right now is fine, but be sure to start doing some research on what these different programs entail. There are 11 different engineering programs, biology and business are popular, but really take some more time to think about what would make you more happy to learn about for the next couple years or so. Feel free to message me for deeper advice.
update: got a 1570 on my sat! and yea my main problem is that I have no idea what I want to do but at the same time I’m worried that I won’t get my major at UT Austin And also yes, I am an automatic admit bc I’m from Texas
I think you have nothing to worry about. Rank and test scores are more important to UT than ECs.
Congrats!! That’s awesome! You’re very competitive for any major you would choose as your first choice. Talk to an admissions counselor, they’ll help.
You are 16-17 year old. It’s perfectly fine not knowing what you want to do for rest of your life. Just go with a major you like, you can always switch major, most people do. Most top colleges don’t even care which major you write on your application.
