Really confused about in-state tuition at the University of Michigan.

I have been attending a Michigan school since I was in 5th grade. But my parents are divorced and my father lives in Texas. Do I have to fill out the form and if so by when? Do I do it only if I get accepted or when I send my application? I am really confused by all of this.

Does your mother live in MI, and do you live with her and attend school in MI? If so, you are considered a MI resident. What is it that confuses you?

What form? If you live with your mother in Michigan and will graduate from a Michigan high school you shouldn’t have to fill out any special forms.

If any of the following circumstances apply, you are required to file an application and be approved for in-state tuition:

• You currently live outside of Michigan (education, volunteer, military, travel, employment, etc.)
• You have attended a high school or college outside of MI
• You have been employed or domiciled outside of MI in the last 3 years
• You are not a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident Alien
• Your spouse, partner or parent is in MI as a nonresident student, medical resident, fellow or for military assignment or other temp employment
• You are 24 years of age or younger and a parent lives outside of MI
• You previously attended any U-M campus (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, or Flint) as a nonresident

You are 24 years of age or younger and a parent lives outside of MI.

I’m not sure if this applies to me.
Maybe I am completely misunderstanding how to do this.

This the detail guideline webpage:

My reading is that it appears UMIch does require you to file the form in your situation, strange as it seems.

But one of the out-of-state activities or ties does apply to you.

Section IV gives the deadlines which are after the semesters begin. I wouldn’t file it until after you’ve been accepted and decided to attend but I wouldn’t wait until after school starts either.

How much time do you spend with your Dad? It doesn’t appear you will have any trouble qualifying if you live with your mom in MI and will graduate from a MI high school. I have a feeling most applicants in your situation don’t notice this, don’t file the form and UMich never notices.

I read it that way, too … lots of work for someone at UM to go through all the divorced kids’ apps!

When the OP applies and receives the Wolverine access the OP will be able to tell how he/she was classified if I recall.

And I would guess that when it shows in-state, most students in the OP’s situation just do nothing and UMich never knows or really cares.

OP, how did you come across this info? Thorough research or did something else bring it to your attention?

Found it on the common app.
