Really nervous about starting college later?

I’m about to turn 22. I’m just now starting college. I lost my career and girlfriend of two years at the same time. Essentially I feel like I’ve failed at everything. I decided I needed to go back to school to better myself and establish a new life that’s a bit of more quality and stability. I feel like I’ve been out of the loop for so long now that it’s a been too late. Socially and academically. Anyone have any success stories about starting later?

I don’t quite have a personal story, but I just felt the urge to encourage and applaud you for your efforts. I’ve had friends who’ve started college late and are doing just fine. I feel as though your age doesn’t really matter. I’m only 19 and just finished my freshman year, but a lot of my classes had adults taking the course. No one really notices, or even cares, how old you are. Even if you’re living in the dorms, that doesn’t matter either. It’s not like someone is going to follow you around announcing your age. You’re only 22, not even, you’re far from being out of the loop. The average senior is about 21 or 22, so actually there will probably be a significant amount of students your age. Also, depending on what school you’re attending, there’s social clubs, fraternities/sororities, intramurals, and other socializing events to help interact with other students.

Don’t think about “failing” because you are starting later…I know some very successful people who just weren’t ready right after HS. Failing is to never try.

You are older and have the maturity to know to take advantage of all the opportunities at college…get to know professors, attend events, join in the community. Think how much better your college experience will be!
