Reapply

Hi guys! I decided to reapply to a few schools after being waitlisted on the last admissions cycle. Can anybody help me how I should go through the process, as it has the same essay topics and etc… It would be really helpful, if you guys could help me out

Hey there! I was also waitlisted by all my schools last year, but this year, I reapplied and am currently at Exeter. As you mentioned, some schools have the same essay topics, and when this was the case for me, I decided to write about a completely new topic. I assume it would look really bad if they found out that you copy and pasted your essays from last year, and submitted it again. Plus, you have an extra year under your belt, so your writing should have improved. Other than that, everything is the same. You still need to schedule interview, take your SSAt, ask your teacher for recommendation, etc. Good luck!

DS1 was waitlisted at several schools his first try. He reapplied the following year and was admitted to every school that waitlisted him a year earlier. Two of the AOs commented how they were impressed that he was trying again. I think the key point is some critical self examination - what gaps do you think existed in last admission cycle, what have you done to close those gaps? For example DS1 added some community service. He was a student athlete and we engaged with the coaches early in the round 2 process.

@Bunny8280 @RedSoxFan18 Thank you for the answer. Just another quick question. How did you deal with the parents’ statement? Since, I am an international student my parents hired a translator last year to translate the form for them. Would it be fine to just copy and past what they wrote last year?

IMO the parent statement is one of the least important parts of the application - granted I stressed over it every time my wife and I sat down together to compose them - and we have been through 4 admit cycles across 3 children. If you parents thoughts about you going through the reapplication cycle it could be worth writing a new one but I suspect simply resubmitting last years will be fine. I am a touch curious about using a translator. Your english is strong, in your parents situation I would have had you translate the statement.

@RedSoxFan18 Thank you so much for helping me out  Last year, I went on the “interview tour” to the States to visit the schools. This time round our family found no time in our schedule; thus, we decided to take the off-campus interview. Would this matter significantly?

I promise I spent more time proof reading my parents statement than I did my previous post.

Personally I don’t think so, between reapplying this year and visiting last year you have shown significant interest. You are unlikely to learn something knew that is going to change your approach by visiting again. Everything else pales in comparison to finding and filling the gaps in your previous application.
