I have been granted to defer a year at the college where I am planning to enrol so that I can spend the time travelling. The college that I got accepted to wasn't my top choice and I am wondering whether I could apply to other colleges that were originally my top choice during my year of deferral? Would the colleges I apply to be allowed to consider me for admission even though I have already sent in my deposit for other college?

You need to check the terms of your deferral at the college where you have paid your deposit. It may be that applying elsewhere would void your agreement with them, and cause you to forfeit both your place in the next entering class and your deposit.

I agree with Sikorsky about checking on the terms of your deferral, but I would guess that the worst case is that you would simply need to reapply to the school that you deferred.

As a general rule, college admissions offices are not allowed to share information about individual applicants. However, your GC or LOR might tip off schools, even if inadvertantly.

I would also caution you from being too optimistic about reapplying. Unless you set the world on fire between now and December, your application will be largely identical to what adcoms reviewed and rejected last year. You will even have the disadvantage of higher expectations due to having another year to prepare applications.

In any event, I commend you on being in a better position than some posters on this site who decide to take a gap year without having any acceptances on which they can fall back.
