Reasonably priced meals in/near Palmer House

For those of you who have been to Chicago Unifieds before, can you tell us what the restaurants in the Palmer House are like? Are they totally overpriced? Any suggestions on places for breakfast and lunch within walking distance? My D really likes eggs/toast for breakfast but I don't want to pay $20 for scrambled eggs as is often the case in big city hotels. Thanks!

There’s a Corner Bakery on S. Michigan right across from the Art Institute which is pretty good for breakfast and maybe $5-10 per person depending on what you get. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/corner-bakery-cafe-chicago-26) Also CafeCito (http://www.cafecitochicago.com/) which is downstairs from the Youth Hostel on Congress Parkway between Wabash and State has really great Cubano sandwiches, caffe latte and other Cuban specialities…it’s not very expensive at all. (But closer to CCPA than Palmer House.) In general, there’s better, cheaper food outside the Loop, but you can do okay near the hotel.

Seven on State (inside Macy’s) has some great lunch places–Noodles by Takashi, Frontera Fresco (sweet corn and chile tamales), then there is Toni Pastisserie & Cafe, Heaven on Seven (gumbo) and Pizano’s on Madison is where we like to go for pizza.

A Chicago foodie friend of mine has just recommended we try these places in the Loop:
http://www.wowbao.com/menu (Chinese/dumplings)
http://www.starofsiamchicago.com/ (Thai)
http://www.monkspubchicago.com/ (Pub/burgers)

Incidentally, we are not going for Unifieds, but will be at the Palmer House this week for my son’s freshman showcase at CCPA.

Thanks… and this same thread has gotten more responses on the MT forum so if anyone is in need of more restaurant ideas check the other thread too. :-)
