Reasons for being denied admission

Do colleges ever tell you why they didn't accept you or does the letter just say you're not in

commonsense~

No, the colleges do not disclose reasons for rejection. With the sheer number of applicants many of the colleges receive, sometimes the only reason for rejection is simply that not all of the great applicants CAN be admitted. In other words, there is not always a clear-cut reason for a student's not being accepted.

Last year, my son made the mistake of going back to a regional adcom after a rejection and attempting to ascertain the reason for his rejection. Suffice it to say that it turned out to be a very negative experience with unnecessary repercussions.

What happend to him?

Normally, they don't volunteer information in a letter, but you or your GC can call and try to get an answer.

I know a teacher who wrote a rec letter for a UC candidate. She contacted the admissions office and was told that the candidate was denied because of weak SAT scores and no community service hours.

UC San Diego assigns a numerical score to applications, and I know that candidates have called to find out their score.

I know a Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at a private college who bent over backwards to "work with" a candidate who was denied admission. She sat down with candidate and parent to discuss a "1-year action plan" to transferring in as a sophomore.
