Reasons to buy a Mac?

Long battery life (close to 4 hours).

Although I'm pro-Mac, I disagree with this. I have a MacBook, and it gets about 2 hours battery life max. Although I dont mind too much, my friends complain about it a lot.

I can understand why some people (particularly geeks) can have a problem with it, though. A lot of the people I hang around with won't buy an Apple because you can't alter hardware on it. However, a lot of people who criticize Apple/Mac haven't even used one yet.

How about a Linux distro? Dell computer now ships select desktops and laptops with Ubuntu, and a lot of Windows programs can be run on Linux through WINE. Plus, no viruses, and no sloppy OS/frequent system crashes. Trust me, once you go Linux, you can't go back.

wait..so do all macs come with windows vista on them? and with microsoft word and stuff?

No. Normally if you buy an Apple, it will only have Mac OSX installed on it. This doesn't have Microsoft Office on it, although you can get a pirated copy online through bit torrent.

If it's less than a year old, take it back to Apple; they owe you a new battery.

Most of the people talking bad about apple, have no idea what they are talking about and probably have never used one. Mac OSX is better then Vista or XP hands down ask anyone who knows anything about computers and they will tell you this. Plus i've heard vista has tons of problems with it. I've had my macbook for over a year now and I do everything that I use to do my pc, but without all of the error messages and viruses. I do all of my school work with the Microsoft Office applications, I do my web design in Adobe and Macromedia software which runs better on my mac then does it my PC. If I was you I would switch to mac, plus it seems to be better when it comes to wireless internet and plug & play stuff.

there are many reasons why Macs are better than Windows; this isn't one of them. for computer programming and other computer-sciencey stuff, the ranking is Linux >>> Windows > Macs. Vista doesn't have any more problems than XP did, and to be fair to Microsoft, my XP laptop rarely crashes (and if it does it's usually my fault).

now as for Linux - it's not hard to use (despite all the rumors to the contrary), nor is it hard to install, and of course Linux is free (free as in free speech... not to mention free as in free beer :)). if you have a PC but hate to use Windows, just download a Linux distribution (I would recommend Ubuntu). unless you like to play video games or visit badly formed websites that require Internet Explorer, Linux is better than Windows :)

you should also upload a Solaris 10 environment

The only thing that macs are better than windows is that they are better at being overrpriced and expensive.

They function much more smoothly. I have a PowerBook G4 and it's amazing. Also, it's much easier to store files and just keep everything orderly.

bobmallet1 his the nail straight on the head.

Bob or Sheed, can you post the price comparison you used? Some claim that Mac are no longer more expensive than HP or Dell. Thanks.

Trying to convince someone that Mac is better than PC or vice versa is like trying to convince a Christian that Judaism is the correct religion. No one is going to change their mind on what type of computer they use. Some people like PC's and some people like Macs. If you dont know what you want, go to an Apple store and try out a Mac, if you like it, buy it. Otherwise, don't.

It's always interesting to me that most Mac denouncers are young men.

Most. Not all. But most.

I used to be in the same camp. Now I'm a pretty satisfied Mac user. I think that Expose and the overall environment are enough for me. I find that I work faster on my Mac. And yes, I do "serious" things on it too. Like Excel and Word and Powerpoint and Stata and other very "serious" programs.

By the way, Macs are pretty similarly priced to most other high-end computers. Lenovos and Macs pretty much compete in their price range.

UCLAri....you should already know...it's all about the Linux

Most Mac denouncers are young men for several reasons.

1) the mac is a girly machine. I mean look at it. Its a piece of electronic equipement that has a sleek design. Of course its going to attract more females to it than the lenovo thinkpad.

2) The majority of people who are computer literate are young men. Therefore, they will more likely be able optimize the Windows OS to work flawlessly. Other people who have no idea how to optimize performance on a windows machine will just give up and buy a mac. It "just works" right?

Yes, goodness forbid my computer actually be aesthetically pleasing. I mean, that must obviously make me less than a man. Because, y'know, men don't like the sleek lines of a nice Italian sports car or a German luxury auto. Us men, we NEVER care about lines.

I bet I can keep up with most of you on an XP machine in terms of optimizations. I still use it regularly at work and on a Windows box I run anyway. But there is definitely something nice about Mac OS X. It's really a well designed OS from the consumer's perspective.

Sheed30,

Linux is great. But when I need support (those rare, but critical times) I like to have an official source to turn to.

O cmon, men only buy nice cars to get the ladies.......

it's impossible to get Windows to work flawlessly. that's a fact. from personal experience, using Linux and Windows on the same computer, I get around 10x as many crashes (application crashes and operating system crashes) in Windows than in Linux. in fact, on this computer, I have never had a Blue Screen of Death ("kernel panic") in Linux, while I've had quite a few in Windows. anyone who is smart enough to get Windows to work anywhere near "flawlessly" will probably be a Linux user!

No operating system is flawless, I use Ubuntu full time and there are still some occasional bugs in it. However, it is highly possible to minimize the potential problems in it. I have never seen a blue screen of death on any windows machine i have used with XP or higher installed. Until recently, I used windows full time and I have not had any problems. When I buy a new machine, I remember to install the proper anti virus and anti spyware. It works fine for me.

I don't think the blue screen of death exists in linux. However, when i was new to the OS, i recreated somethign similar to it. It wasn't really the kernel going down, but Xorg. I messed with my configuration file and when i restarted my windows manager, it died. Completely my fault heh.
