Reasons why you got accepted to UCLA

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ (hum, i assume this is referring to physics.)

Anyway,I do agree with you on the essay part. I don’t think engineering school cares to much about how fancy your essay is. But is it true that you have to have a 3.9 GPA to be considered? I checked UCB’s stats, and the admission rate for engieenring school is about 25% and average GPA is 3.75 for the admitted.

[UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2008](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof08_mjr.htm)

Looks like the average gpa of EE admits is 3.58, so I was off a bit. But they ARE nutty about prereqs. No engineering school (from what I’ve seen, UCLA or elsewhere) accepts IGETC. They have their own very stringent, very specific prereqs. I can’t say for sure at UCLA, but I know at Berkely they want you to graduate 2 years after you transfer. You have to request a waiver from the dean to continue taking classes after that time. Because of this, they want you to enter as a junior, otherwise you’d have a very difficult time finishing in 2 years. When I transfer, I’ll technically be a sophomore because I won’t have completed all my lower division major requirements by then.

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■,

I think it’s a good thing the engineering school does not require or follow IGETC. That way we can focus on only the math and physics classes. I saw the list of prerequisites for engineering majors, they are fairly reasonable. If we don’t need to finish IGETC, at least we don’t have to take foreign languages or for me (mechanical engineering) no biology as well, no history!!! That saves a lot of headaches for me.

by the way, what is
avg.
units-
applicants ( units taken at cc?)

^Absolutely, it works for what they want to do. It would be a waste for a mecheng major to take a language class when they could take a class that would better help them to ensure that the brakes on my car don’t ever go out.

-avg.
units-
applicants
is the average number of units completed by by the applicants when they’ve completed their final semester/quarter at the school they’re coming from… in QUARTER units. 105 quarter units equals 70 semester units.

Hm. I’d like to think that my essays were strong enough to get my character as a student across. Their subject matter wasn’t particularly unusual or compelling but I think they worked well together. My first essay was about how much I like English because I like to read and oh hey once I wrote for newspaper somewhere isn’t that neat? and the second was about how much I liked to draw and look at me poring over textbooks and drawing naked people in order to get better. I guess put together, it made sense. Showed that I was willing to go through **** for something I love, and since my major is something I love, I’d probably be a great English major. Or something.

Strong upwards grade trend helps too. Aside from that, my ECs were mediocre-to-nonexistent. I did get all my prereqs done, though, which is good.

Political Science
3.5/IGETC, no TAP
Horrid essays and a boatload of W’s.

And the worst thing about it is that I don’t even care because I made up my mind on Davis a week ago.

Condolences to those who weren’t accepted.

spywear, do you live near LA area? It seems like more people going to CC in the LA area gets accepted into UCLA more than other parts of California.

I didnt have any real EC’s to boast of but I got in! Maybe it was because I took 9 classes at once in one of my semesters and still passed all my classes.

I think you just have to do something out of the ordinary, doesnt matter what.

i have taken multiple upper division courses in my major (math) and done well in. so compared to cc students who they can only judge off lower div classes, i looked good despite my lower gpa (3.43).

“uc!hopefully…
You got rejected because you applied as a EE, which requires you to finish every single agonizing prereq and get a 3.9 to even be considered.”

balls… your wrong…

i have a 3.5 and im done with all my prereqs by the end of this term. also my friend who had a 3.9 and and internship with jpl got denied…
i appreciate your attempt to solve the question but alas they are crazy…the more horro stories i hear the more i see a pattern…
all my ee friends who havent got in to UCSD yet got into UCLA and all my EE friends who got into UCSD didnt get into UCLA… i wonder what magic berkely will add to the equation… rumor is might get into cal but i doubt it…

any who UCSD is ranked better for all engineering and i had already put my SIR earlier that day so i didnt really care but my friend did and that ****es me off he didnt get in : / ohh well

peace

English major, good essays…

and then I had a 3.9 GPA. :)

But no TAP.

hey you guys, when you say you have some pre reqs missing do you mean missing when you applied? or missing even after the spring semester/quarter?

major: Bizecon
GPA: 3.56
prereqs: done
IGETC: done
EC: None
essay: nothing special, I just stated I studied hard (being a good student) to repay my parents, to make my parents live better in the future(600+ words). About 200 words about major(just wrote what made me interest in Econ)

work: 20hrs/week

no tap

p.s. my counsellor asked me to rewrite the personal statement, she said it was a bad one, but I never thought i’d get into UCLA with 3.56 gpa so i didnt rewrite.

I would say I am just lucky.

@LHKorLWH: wow, you really are lucky!!! Congrats!

LHKorLWH: SO LUCKY!!!

Major: Bus Econ
GPA: 3.93 when at the end of Fall. 3.78 now after a C in Calc. HAHA

Reason: High GPA, TAP, lots of extra curricular, good essay.

major: economics
GPA: 4.0
reasons: finished all pre-reqs, one year transfer if that means anything?, alot of AP credits, many e/c activities

"**************
in regars to your post …
I am a 27 year old who got kicked out of 3 high schools and only got my diploma because the ged test gives you a few extra units towards ur degree. moved out on my own before my senior year of high school… worked several dead end jobs did lots of drugs till one day life got real bad…no home no money no car… so i joined the army served the country went to war… came back got a real estate licence decided it wasnt for me went to school
i now i have a 3.5 gpa with a major in Electrical Engineering. live on my own support my self and ucla didnt seem to think that was a good enough reason to come…soo your theory is flawed… u want diverse i have lived in 11 states and three countries saw men die to defend this country and people with lower gpas get in? BS! Its no surprise that this schools rankings are on the decline and ucsd’s are on the way up…
all my white friends didnt make it lol but all my asian friends did…they are racist towards whitey… "

dude, seriously, get out of here with that ■■■■■■■■ crap. I’m considered white by those ********, fictional race categories the government uses and I got in.
