Reasons why you got accepted to UCLA

uc!hopefully

So what do you think is the reason both you and your pal who has 3.9 didn’t get in???are you guys still waiting for UCB?

I think trying to determine a generalized metric for UCLA’s acceptence methodology is stupid given the apparent concensus that LA uses transfer students to beef the diversity scores of their student body; if they are seeking diversity, it would seem antitheticle for them to distribute some sort of standardized function for reviewers to utilize during applicant review.

My daughter is a 4.0 GPA junior at a good high school. She is President of her own School Club, Varsity sport team member, lots of volunteers and extra curriculers. Her SAT scores are only fair–1900.
Is there ANY chance at all that she might be admitted to UCLA as an incoming freshman? She is feeling so hopeless, but it is what she wants so badly.

She is a good writer, so will probably write a strong heartfelt essay, but we wonder if that is enough.
Any tips are welcome and appreciated.

^
Do you realize this is a UC TRANSFERS subsection?
But I’ll answer your question anyways…with another question. Is the 4.0 GPA weighted or unweighted? Her GPA seems to be a tad bit under the median. 1900 on the SAT is not that bad but it will not help her, since the median is around 2000. I give her a 55/100 of getting in.

The 4.0 is a weighted GPA. Does that lessen her odds of getting in?

I always feel bad for people when I hear about their children (or them) working sooooo hard in high school just to get into a school, especially Cal and UCLA. Knowing I got in (both) after failing out of high school, breezing through CC without any clubs or extracurricular, and not even buying books most the time.

Tell her to forget HS and go for the CC transfer! It’s seriously too easy.

@Getinthere

a friend of mine got rejected from UCLA, she was ranked 3rd in our graduating senior magnet class. UCLA looks for diversity, no offense to you, but your daughter is one of thousands of high schoolers with those exact credentials

and you say her weighted gpa is 4.0? from my experience that lessens her chances of getting in seeing as how a 3.6-3.7 unweighted is equivalent to around 4.0 weighted when taking Honors/AP classes into consideration.

if anything those ec’s and good essays are what you should tell her to focus on, imo. an SAT score of 1900 out of 2400 is higher than average, but most UCLA admits from high school are 2000+

it’s a toss up, imo. if worst comes to worst, you can always appeal.

I wonder if there’s any way of knowing… if TAP got me in… or my GPA + essays :/

Gettinthere, tell your daughter to retake her SATs and also take the ACTs for higher scores. Generally, most UCLA and Cal hopefuls aim for 2000 or above. I think the average freshman admit has around a 4.2 at UCLA, but that still means around half have LESS than a 4.2, so I think 4.0 is just fine, although strong grades this semester would be better. Also, make sure your daughter takes a challenging workload senior year. ECs, leadership, awards, and essays also play a role, so I don’t see why your daughter wouldn’t have a chance at admittance. If not . . . I found the transfer process extremely easy, and I definitely didn’t have your daughter’s credentials in high school.

Here’s what I got guys,

major: Political Science
GPA: 4.00
prereqs: will be done this spring
IGETC: all done (with AP tests i might add)
EC: Own and run my own IT business
Taekwondo instructor
A few musical performances :P

No TAP

Gettinthere,

Ehh, it’s highschool. Save money and go to a CC for a year or two, don’t be embarrassed about it. I saved a good chunk load of money and heartache that way. I am a year ahead of my highschool graduating class (where I was a failure btw haha). SAT’s are difficult to study for, personally I never studied and got a 1980, I was happy with that so I left it. I’m sure I couldve done better if i studied, but don’t expect it to increase more than 100 points or so I’ve heard. If your daughter can take AP classes, take them. It’s stupid how kids take classes and then not the test. When I left highschool, I had around 50 units of transferrable credit done and it saved alot of money. Tell her not to be lazy and study! Hope that helps :)

Hello Revel! I’ll be joining you next year as a poli sci major =)

3.6 GPA
IGETC al lrequirements are done
I’m confused why i was accepted while some of my friends got rejected…my thing is my essay, I guess, I speak 3 languages, and an immigrant. (but fall into category of “white” not diverse.)
My 3.6 was an improvement though–From B’s to suddenly A’s when I started enjoying and got some friends who told me I should work just a bit harder (they were right).
Can’t wait =]
My thing is CC is relatively easy, just do well in classes, and do one-two things that you like. I was involved with the Jewish organization on campus for fun,and worked with kids =].

I doubt it was my gpa (3.33). It could be my essay I guess. My major not being impacted (chemistry) might have helped as well.
