Reauditioning next year

Hey, I’m a senior. I’m really scared I won’t make it into a program so if I don’t this year is it still good to take a year off or go to a college than transfer and reaudition? What are some schools that let you transfer to their musica theatre program?

Lots of people take a gap year. However, transferring in is problematic. You won’t be able to transfer into a BFA program as a sophomore unless you do a BFA somewhere else, and even that is difficult.

You should check the admissions/musical theater requirements for any school you’re interested in. As far as I know Penn State allows BFA Musical Theater transfers and other schools probably do too. I don’t know which geographical area you’re interested in, but SUNY Fredonia also has a transfer application for BFA MT. Another thing that Fredonia does for their Acting auditionees, and I think also for their MT auditionees is that if you don’t get into the program by audition, you can enroll in their school and they’ll help you to prepare to reaudition the next year (if you’re not an enrolled Fredonia student, they can’t help you to improve your audition). I’m also guessing that there are schools that allow for students who’ve attended community college/gotten an associate’s degree to apply to their programs. If you’re wanting a pure conservatory, those associate’s credits might not help, but if it’s a BFA in a liberal arts college, this could eliminate some core liberal arts credits that could transfer in. If you transfer in to a school, it may take you longer to graduate so that you can fit everything in.

^^^ Be careful. Lots of schools that “allow transfers” make you start over again as a freshman. So even if you have a full year (or even 2) at another program, if you transfer into a BFA program, you start all over again as a freshman. So, think hard before you go somewhere else while you get ready to re-audition. In addition, some schools have fewer slots for transfers, so it is harder to get in as a transfer than as someone who took a gap year.

Having said all that, going into auditions with fear and the mind set that you won’t get in anywhere is probably not advisable. Work as hard as you can to get ready for your auditions, give it your all, be yourself, be confident, and see what happens. You NEVER know what might happen. Break legs!

hey!! I was a senior last year and graduated in the class of 2015 at my high school. I took a year off to audition for colleges and it was best decision I have made my entire life. I was able to solely focus on preparing for these auditions as well as applying as a MT major without the stress of schoolwork and tests. You should definitely consider it! I wrote a huge discussion thread based upon my gap year- explaining my experience with colleges, their opinions on the matter, my training on my time off, and a lot of other helpful info. I think it will really benefit you if you read it! If you go to my profile, and click on my threads, you’ll see the discussion I posted labeled “Gap Year”. Best of luck to you!

Hey! I took a year off after not getting accepted into any audition programs last year, and so far, this year is going much better. PM me if you’d like!

I am on the same boat. I am a senior and I got an offer from for a ba mt program and I am waiting to hear back from a bfa program. I only auditioned for 7 school and I got callbacks auditions three of them. I am trying to decide if I should go to the school I want to end up at as an undecided major and audition next year again or do the ba or bfa program and audition again as a transfer. Next year I plan on auditions for a lot of schools and I am trying to figure the best option. I am a little hesitate to take a gap year. Any advice?
