To give a sense of where I'm at, this is my current college list:

1) Northwestern
2) Emory
3) Johns Hopkins
4) Tufts University
5) Vanderbilt
6) Carnegie Mellon
7) NYU
8) UC System
-UC Berkeley
-UCLA
-UCSD
-UCD/UCSB
9) USC
10) Boston University

My college counselor said I had a 1 in 2 chance of getting into Northwestern. (He's very "well-ranked" amongst college guidance counselors.)

I'm thinking of dropping Boston University as my safety and applying for some other school instead. I have no preferences except that it be a relatively "smart" university/college and that it have more than 5-10% Asians.

I'm applying undecided.

What safeties/targets would you recommend for me?

oh man, we’re right in the same pool. Your school list almost matches mine. I really want to get into Northwestern. What im concerned about is SAT subject test scores for there. Not only will i not have the recommended 3 tests, but my math is probably below 700 and could be anywhere in the 600s. My US history is much higher though. What about you?

Might look at Holy Cross(don’t have to be religious)very good school but easier to get into vs Tufts. HC has nice campus-1 hour from Boston and the school has great alumni network.

Rather than Holy Cross or Boston University, I would use Boston College as a safety. You are probably going to get into a few of your target schools. I don’t think you need to apply as low as BU or HC.

I don’t think people can use BC as a “safety”. It’s got very competitive admissions.

Will your parents pay full price for wherever you go to school? If not, that will impact your choice of safety schools since most don’t give much aid.
