<p>Typically, the faculty member in charge of the lab will write the letter of recommendation with input from the postdoc or research scientist. Sometimes the PI will have the postdoc draft the letter, then the PI will edit it as necessary and sign it. Even if you worked directly with a research scientist, it is better to have the letter written by someone with a faculty-level academic appointment.</p>
<p>Well, I’ve honestly maybe said 2 sentences to the prof. Never saw him at the lab. How would that work? The research scientist offered to write me one, but didn’t mention anything about the prof so I don’t want to say “hey can you write it and have the prof sign it” because I don’t want to belittle him.</p>
