For the Common Application, I know it specifies "academic subjects" for the teacher recommendations. Would a speech teacher suffice? The thing is, I am heavily involved in speech and she is both my speech teacher and speech coach. I also plan to major in International Relations/Political science in which case speaking is a major part of that.

Would I be able to use her recommendation for a Yale app? Also, would AP Spanish teacher work for the other recommendation?

Speech and debate are not considered core academics in high school, regardless of how important they will be to your likely college major. The core academic areas in high school are English, Social Studies, Math, Science and Foreign Language.

Thank you! Please, any other thoughts? I directly e-mailed the Yale student questions website, and they said the “academic” teachers is recommended, but that if my speech teacher knows me really well then she would be the best to write my letter.

I think that they are more trying to avoid kids getting recs from like gym teachers. In your case, I think you would be fine getting one from your speech teacher

Does Yale allow additional recommendations? I think have the speech coach write one of them would be a wiser choice that devoting one of the core common app recommendations to her.

“If you feel the need to submit extra information, you may ask one additional recommender to write on your behalf. Please do not solicit this additional letter unless you feel it will add substantially to your application. The writer should know you well personally or have mentored you closely in some capacity. Please ask that person to include the following at the top of their letter: your full, legal name as it appears in your application, the name and location of your high school, and your date of birth. The letter should be labeled “Supplementary” to avoid confusion.”
