I'm a junior and I'm starting to wonder when/how to ask for recommendations for next year. How much notice should I give a teacher? A few months ago at a parent-teacher conference, my chemistry teacher offered to write me one. Would it be awkward to take him up on that? What is the process of getting a recommendation? Can we read the recommendations teachers write for us?

Thank you! :)

I’m planning on asking my teacher in May- my school has a process of recommendations- we fill out a form about ourselves, then ask the teacher for the recc. If they say yes, we give them the form. They put the essay on our naviance accounts, and our guidance counselor ships them off to the schools we’re applying to. Your school may have some kind of process too, ask your guidance counselor about it.

No, be happy a teacher approached you about it! If you’re on the same terms or better with that teacher, ask him to write you one.

It’s a good idea to ask at the end of jr year before school ends. Often the teachers that write good LORs have to limit the number of students they can help.

If they offered, it’s fine to ask them for an LOR.

Usually you don’t read the LOR, but it is OK if the teacher permits you to do so.
