I am a junior in high school right now and college is getting closer and closer but I still feel like I have not developed a strong interest in any certain field. I would like to have an idea of what major may interest me in order to look at colleges with a strong department in that major and to ask questions about certain programs when I go on college visits. I understand that majors can change while in college but I would like to get a basic feel for what I want to study.

So far in high school I have developed interests in a few subjects. I have become very interested in history, mainly debating about certain trends and arguments. I have already taken AP World History (5 on exam) and right now I am taking APUSH and AP Euro (should get 5s on both). However, I have always been very gifted in math and sciences. In math I have had A+'s all through high school. I plan on taking Calc BC (skipping AB) and Stat next year. In Science, I am breezing through AP Chem right now and should be on my way to 5. I am also considering something with business as our school has a big DECA program (marketing club) which has interested me in the possibilities of management or entrepreneurship.

Pretty much, I am all over the place with what I enjoy. Pretty much, I enjoy a challenge and dont like doing the same thing over and over again. Any suggestions about a group of majors or a major would be greatly appreciated. I dont know too much about a lot of majors so anything is welcome.

Also, if it helps, I am number one of 500 in my class and my top colleges right now are USMA, Duke, WashU, and maybe Harvard or Princeton as a reach.

You seem like a really strong student-congrats! So if I read everything right your interests are history, math, science, & government? I’m a little confused about what you meant in your first post about “trends” in history…depending on what you mean it seems like you might also be interested in sociology. Possible Majors: Political Science, Business, History (sorry to point out the obvious), Statistics, Biostatistics, Chemistry, BioChemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Fiance, public health, Comparative Government/Law

Sorry, but I don’t know of a major that combines ALL of these elements. Not to say there isn’t one though. IMHO try to decide what subject your major has to encompass & what subject can become a hobby. For example, maybe history doesn’t have to be part of your major but since you like it so much you decide to read historical books.

Thanks! You make a valid point about the hobbies. Hopefully by the time I declare I will be interested in one field in particular. Thanks for the help!

Wow. Congrats on being so intelligent!
I think an important aspect to consider is what kind of job you want to pursue after college.
Do you want to work mainly indoors or outdoors? Are you a people person? Are you a leader of a group or do you prefer to work alone? Perhaps narrowing down your major will be easier if you think of the career you want to pursue afterwards.

Also, with your depth of ability, I would even suggest considering a double major.
Some majors to consider off the top of my head:
Political Science
Any branch of Engineering
Sciences (broad, but I’m sure you can narrow it down according to your interests)

Engineering combines the aspects of math and science.

Especially macroecon or intl business. It incorporates maths, speech and leadership, government, and all that jazz. I’m pretty aure thats your range. Thing keep changing do you’ve always gotta be on your feet.

Your major would probably be Business Management or Admin. With either degree, you can go anywhere in the business world.

Double major is something I have considered. Would a double in something like poli sci and econ be viable or helpful at all?

As for jobs, I would prefer working inside and doing something that is more of a mental exercise than anything physical. I can deal with physical (I run track and am around 4:30 in the mile and 1:59 in the 800) but I like challenging myself mentally more than doing physical activity.

Right now, my main thoughts have been doing something with business (very vague idea) and maybe getting my MBA. Another thing I have considered was trying to go to law school. A third option would be to do something with a government office and work as management or the likes with that.
