Recommendations

The JMU application says that a teacher/ counselor application is optional but will it effect my admissions whether I have one or not?

I can’t say for sure, but I assume that everything marked as optional should be done to show your level of interest in your application.

I believe the website says it is not required - but that if you do send it - it must accompany the transcript. The counselor evaluation is required and high schools should automatically send that with the transcript. When we attended an info session last year - they seemed to really stress that a teacher rec was not required - and given the number of apps they receive - the limited time they have to read them, etc. My son did not send one - based on this info. But, I certainly can see the point that there is no harm in sending one.

It’s all about how bad you want it…if I was an admissions officer I’d wonder why an applicant didnt take the time to attatch recommendations.

I did…and I’m currently here. I’m not saying it directly correlates to my acceptance but if JMU is your number one I highly recommend it.

I would definitely put a recommendation letter with my transcript - it shows you are very interested and it also show that you actively participate in school in general. By getting teachers and counselors to say that you are ambitious, work hard, all of the things a college looks for means a lot.
