i know UCs reuqire 2 yrs of foreign language and RECOMMENDS 3 yrs.
i am a senior and have only 2 yrs
do i absolutely need to take another yr of foreign language?
or is it too late

Do you absolutely need to take another year? No, because only 2 years are required.

Should you? That’s up to you. If 3 years are recommended, that means taking 3 years of a foreign language could very well enhance your chances of being admitted, and I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to enhance your chances if you can.

What is the reason for you not wanting to take another year of foreign language? If it is a scheduling conflict – like you want to take another AP or honors class that is more relevant to your interests – then that might be fine. If you just don’t feel like taking any more foreign language, then I say suck it up and just take the 3rd year. Two years of high school Spanish or French isn’t really enough to do anything useful with anyway, in terms of actually learning the language, which is why colleges prefer 3 or 4. And if you take the extra year, chances are you can place into a higher level in college (and the majority of colleges require students to take the equivalent of four semesters of a foreign language). I took 3 years of French in high school and only had to take one more semester in college, and I was done with my foreign language requirement.
