Recommender wants a draft letter?

Hi!

I’m a senior applying to college with a supplemental recommendation from a research professor in whose lab I participated for about 200 hours last summer (between 10th and 11th).

I asked him if he had any research abstracts in which I was published for my work, but he said that the research is still in progress so no paper, though he offered to write me a college recommendation as a testament for my work in his lab. I said yes and he requested a draft letter and a CV such that he would know what is helpful to write.

What exactly should I hand over to him? What should be in a draft letter?

Thanks!

The contents should echo what you want him to say in his recommendation. That should include:

  • Basic background on you and your goals
  • Specific accomplishments with dates. They dont have to be related to your work. For example, you could mention academic honors. You want him to mention things that are positive and relevant to your experience.
  • Specific dates that you need him to complete the recommendation by.
  • Write it in the form of a letter with a thank you at the end.
