recovering addict

My child's high school career was influenced by drugs. Her grades were ok (3.7 in California) and SAT's surpisingly good (1950 having smoked heroin hours earlier). During this calendar year, she has been off drugs and heavily involved in an intense therapeutic program. She is now excelling academically and will retake the SATs while clean. We are all so proud of her and are not wanting to push her.

To what extent does this explanation influence admissions? She aspires to go to a competetive university. Should she explain her overcoming this challenge on her essay? My thought is yes as this has been a life defining event (and continues to be so).

Also, does such a background qualify her for consideration under ADA?

Thank you for your responses.

I have no idea, but her SAT score is very impressive. 90th percentile…on heroin.

Now that I think about it, I doubt that is a good idea.

Society views drug users as scumbag criminals/fiends, and that’s just the way it is. They do not want people who have admitted to a felony.
