Excellent suggestions, everyone.
Condor, Found the piece in the times - very helpful.
nceph, Had seen the thread, but that was when S was only considering D1s. Lots of great suggestions and advice. Our plan now is to tape S's games, email coaches, look at one top D3 soccer LAC (probably Amherst) and see if S becomes interested.

Neuroticparent, many div 3 colleges wait until Jan of senior year, after the college showcases to go after prospects.

Send in the tapes, and don't worry about the height. Contact the coaches before the showcase so they look for your son.

Everybody who wanted to ended up playing in college from my kid's old club team. Most play div 3. A couple play div 1. A couple more could have played div 1. It was a very good club team in Nor Cal. You can go to college's web sites and look at rosters. Many times you will see short players. One thing you will notice is most players come from the same area of the country as the college. Div 3 budgets are very low.

If your son goes to div 1, He can try to play on a club team. The season is shorter, and you practice probably 2 or 3 times a week. You play other colleges. It is taken seriously. There is a national championship.

Some div 3 coaches can't really get your son into the school. So your son should have more than one choice.

There are always intramurals. And when kids go to college, they sometimes want to reinvent themselves and give up the sport and try something else. That's good too.

happened to read a posting today on another board................

.......at the jjhuddle recruiting forum.......that there are some d1's already recruiting now the class of 2009 (soccer). coaches watch players "live" in events during the summer after their sophomore year ...............and then............ unofficial visits are in the fall of the junior year. verbals are given then in that junior year but no letter of intent is signed until senior year in february. try a google search on "jjhuddle ohio high forums recruiting information" to see the post.

Thanks, everyone. Will sit down with my son and identify some D3 schools to contact (though he is still leaning toward playing club at a D1 school.)
