Our son has already been invited on official visits for September at several Ivy schools. Does this mean that the coaches believe he would be a solid prospect for a likely letter? He has already submitted test scores/GPA/subject test scores. Any insight would be helpful. Thank you.

What it means right now is that he checks all the boxes with no red flags, such as test scores and GPA. There will be more students that will be invited on official visits than there will be likely letters given out.Everything will be decided based on where he fits time wise on the list of swimmers who accept the visits and how your son seems to fit in with the swimmers at that school during his visit. Coach will ask his host as well as others how your son would fit. Was he too cocky, was he friendly etc.

I’'m not sure about swimming, but in my kid’s sport, unofficial visits were done in the spring of junior year and verbal commitments exchanged then. Official preread done during the summer. Was told to start on the application for early decision as soon as the common application was out in August. Then interviewed in mid Sept by the admissions committee. All LoRs and completed application submitted on Sept 15. to be in time for the first round of LL’s. Then received the Likely Letter Oct 1. Perhaps the protocol for swimming is different???
