I have been recruited by a D3 coach. He was in frequent contact with me over the last few weeks before the ED deadline. I was not ready to commit as I had other schools recruiting me. He sent an email asking me to let him know that day so he could add me to his list for admissions I friday. I did decided to apply to this school and the coach told me he would full supportmyapplocation all the way through. I also had a pre-read and was given a confident thumbs up by the coach. I’m getiting very nervous now after reading some of these messages. Should I contact the coach and ask him directly how many he is supporting? He seems extremely committed to me.
Excuse typos. Using water damaged Iphone…
He said he’s supporting you. Does it make a difference to you if he’s also supporting 5 or 6 others? Will you withdraw your ED application if you find out he is supporting others?
Personally, I would not contact the coach. You said that the coach is enthusiastic about you. Plus you have a positive pre read. I know it is VERY hard to wait for a decision. My son is waiting for a decision too. Coaches are enthusiastic about him but he is borderline with admissions. Just try to keep busy and you will have a decision soon. My son is trying to focus on school and scholarship applications. Hope you get good news soon…
Swimfly,
I can’t tell whether you have already applied ED, or merely promised the coach that you would do so. If you have applied ED, as Twoin suggests, I am not sure what you would do if the coach now answers those questions in a less than positive way.
Recruits should ask a number of questions before they decide where they will apply early decision. For example, they should ask whether they can get admitted and would the coach request an admissions pre-read. It sounds like you have an answer to that question. Recruits should ask where they are on the recruiting list. The reason you should ask this is to find out whether you are wasting an ED opportunity to be no. 20 on a list of 20 recruits (yes, it happens). However, your post suggests that the coach has been very enthusiastic and supportive. While you don’t have a specific answer, it doesn’t sound like the coach is going to abandon you, so you pretty much have an answer to that question as well. You also should ask if the coach cuts recruits, but I think it is a bit late for that query.
All in all, the suggested questions are intended to inform the process a little earlier on than where you are right now. I agree with Allboyz that this process does generate jitters, but I am not sure that that is a bad thing. There are no enforceable promises, so you need to trust the coach and keep your fingers crossed.
I wish you the best of luck.
Twoinanddone, I know he is supporting other swimmers but to my knowledge, not in my events. I know he is supporting me, I know that I got a thumbs up from admissions, just after reading a bunch of similar stories where the student didn’t get in after all freaked me out a bit. I turned down some great schools because I love the plan this particular coach has for the team. I know there are no guarantees and 4 weeks really isn’t very long to wait. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.
Do D3 recruited athletes applying ED hear either from the school or coach before the school’s deadline? My D applied to a NESCAC where ED is supposed be notified by Dec 15. Just curious
Coach told D to notify her when receive the notification. So I guess some coaches don’t know beforehand.
Mcr9,
My NESCAC experience is that athletes are told at the same time as other ED applicants. Some NESCACs may issue an “early write” for regular admission applicants. The idea behind the early write is that a college could be the first to provide good news and thus gain a leg up on its competitors. That typically does not occur in ED applications because if the applicant is admitted, he or she (pretty much) has agreed to attend. In other words, there is no particular benefit to a college to provide an early write for athletes applying ED.
Kchendds, in the NESCAC at least, coaches aren’t told the official result of the application. That kind of makes sense, because one would hope the applicant would be the first to know the official admissions outcome. That’s not to say that coaches don’t have a sense of what is going to happen based on past experience and pre-reads, but in the NESCAC the applicants typically tell the coach the outcome one way or the other.
You are absolutely correct^. I believe the coach has a good sense of the acceptance but they probably wouldn’t be the first one to get notified officially. I was hoping she could confirm it and we could celebrate early. :">
This question has been asked multiple times on these threads. As stated above, the D3 athletic recruits get the news the same time as the other ED applicants.
My son in the same waiting game at top tier d1, applied REA with coach support… Will he also have to wait Til official decision day?
My son also applied ED to a D1 school. He has coach support through admissions but no athletic aid so no NLI. I don’t think he will hear anything until the official day. It sure would be nice to know sooner.
I agree. It would be nice to hear something sooner. I do not think that it will happen. Oh well…three more weeks for us. Seems like some people in our area got their letters around the 12th of December last year. However, the official date is by the 15th.
Yes, this waiting for ED response is always so stressful
My son is supposed to hear Dec 5th as their deadline for applying was Nov 1
Good luck to all of you
Think the waiting is hard on us parents, cannot imagine what it’s like for our athletes! They have worked so hard and put their faith in this coach, hopefully they will get good news in a couple of weeks…
