Recruiting and FA

This discussion was created from comments split from: Likely Letter ?'s.

Related to this topic, here is our situation. D21 received a “green light” letter from admissions as well as a letter from the Coach (D3). We also did an early financial aid assessment. The financial aid package was ok but not great. We had planned to apply EA but the Coach would obviously prefer ED. Any chance admissions would sweeten the pot a bit if we went with EA? I doubt it but this is our debate over the next two days!

They will not, and cannot, sweeten the pot because of the athletics. They have to treat all students the same.

If they would give more money to any student in your position (income, scores, grades, other financial needs of the family) they will, but not because the coach asks them to.

I don’t think any additional money will depend on ED or EA.

Not likely because they have already put your FA package in writing. It would be tough to explain why all of a sudden it changed. Might work if you appealed the FA.

I’d ask the coach if there is anyway to get a merit scholarship or appeal the FA. They will tell you if there is an angle to be played.

I agree it’s not likely they will find more money.

Would the coach’s level of support be the same in EA? If your kid hasn’t asked that yet, they should, especially if the school is a reach without the athletic recruit hook.

She is in line for merit but they will reduce FA by that amount. This school is a match. She has straight A’s in the IB Programme. The coach will offer support either way.

Which would be the case at most universities.

Just commenting or noting that we had a D/S that was an Ivy LL Recruit and we did talk to the FA office several times and they revised the financial aid/scholarship package and we received more FA.
This had nothing to do with them being an athlete but had to do with how they looked at our financials. The FA office was very good to work with though I would say they really knew their stuff and it had to be a very legit reason to get them to reconsider.
I mention it only to say that you can speak to the FA office.
Also, as @skieurope stated, merit and other scholarship awards will reduce the FA, at least at an Ivy.
