I know that Yale recriuts for athletes, but does it recruit for singers (i.e. a state finalist for tenors)? If so, does that mean a likely letter???

BUMP - my son is a talented (state finalist) tenor who is very interested in Yale (he’s a junior) and has heard it has amazing male choral groups - do they recruit? Would it help with his admissions next year??? His stats are all very good. Thanks for any info!!!

Yale does not recruit musicians. Musical ability is not the same as athletic ability in the admissions process. While outstanding athletic ability may be a “hook,” i.e., an institutional priority that can tip the admissions decision in favor of an applicant who is being recruited to a team, musical talent – even exceptional musical talent – seldom is. (Someone with the talent of, say, Lang Lang, would be the exception, but the argument could be made that someone at that level is being chosen for celebrity status rather than sheer musical talent.)

That’s not to say that exceptional musical talent plays no role in the admissions decision. Your son should plan prepare a music CD to send with his application. (Check with the department for requirements with respect to repertoire and time limit.) If he makes it past the first hurdle with respect to grades, scores, and curriculum, the admissions office will forward his CD on to the appropriate department for review. A good rating can help an application, although it won’t have the potency of support from an athletic coach.

In part because music is so strong at Yale, they really don’t need to recruit for it. The musicians come on their own.

JHS – You’re of course correct that music is strong at Yale. But I think the OP is wondering whether her musician son could have the same admissions advantage as a recuited athlete. The short answer is, no. When a coach recommends a recruited athlete for admission, that recommendation carries great weight in the admissions process, and the more important the sport, the greater the weight of the recommendation. The recommendation of music faculty carries far less weight in admissions.

Thanks for the info - he is also a swimmer/water polo guy, but his first love is singing…

Hopefully he’'l make it to sing at Yale!
