Hi, just wondering if any of your kids did a redshirt year as a sophomore and how did that work out for them. My D has been given the option, it is not required but offered. The school said they would extend her $ for a 5th year if she chooses to do so. I contacted the coach to get some info for myself to make sure exactly what was going on and after getting her feedback I feel much better about it, however my D is on track to graduate in 4 years and is not super enthusiastic about having to go to school for a 5th year. I imagine after playing as a freshman (minimal time) that it would be very hard to do all the work and not ever get to suit up. Would appreciate any insight from those that have done so.

No firsthand redshirting experience here, but a couple questions. Is she on a full or partial scholarship now? I’m assuming she’ll continue to receive her scholarship $ during her redshirt season.

If she can get out in 4 years, is there any advantage for her to attend school for a 5th year? (double major, etc?) or would it just be a favor to the team and coach?

She is getting about 60% of her education paid for with her athletic aid. The coach told us she would receive it as well for her 5th year if she chooses to redshirt and that she will receive it for the full 4 years if she chooses not too… (big sigh of relief). She is not a “lover” of school and one of her biggest problems was having to take classes for a 5th year. We have not discussed any education beyond her BA. I don’t see graduate school in her plan.

If she can get out in 4 years and really doesn’t want to stay for 5, and it will cost you another 40% of annual tuition for that 5th year - I guess I don’t understand why you’re even considering a redshirt year

My thoughts, exactly, Varska.

Getting a double major, or starting Master’s courses would be a good thing. Fall or spring sport? If fall, it would only be one more semester which might be handy if she drops any classes or wants to take a lighter load a few semesters. Taking less credits could lead to a higher GPA if she uses her time wisely. These days you hear of more kids taking more than 4 years to graduate due to scheduling problems etc.

Thanks football mom, its a winter sport and crosses both semesters, basketball. I talked to her today about meeting with her academic advisor and seeing about a minor/credential or such.
