Referendum of Greek Life Begins Today

Mamabear… Endicott is not a student at swat. I don’t think you should take his or her posts to be representative of anything. And while it is understandable that you want to find a college where people are nice to each other, anonymous internet posting boards aside, you will not find a ‘nicer’ community than swat. There are divisive issues on campus right now, that people are (rightfully) passionate about, but I think that people are going about changing things with a great degree of thoughtfulness. I do not think being nice means ignoring huge structural problems.

mamabear1234,
Your post #60 is really off base. As the parent of a Swarthmore graduate as well as a current Swarthmore student, my personal experience hosting groups of Swarthmore students in my home, from athletic teams to a cappella groups, has shown that these students are kind, thoughtful, extremely intelligent, and well-spoken. Some of the responses you are receiving on this thread are from parents who know quite a bit about the school. Again, I hope that your daughter enjoys Pomona.

Let me begin by reiterating that the filing of complaints regarding the Clery Act and Title IX seems completely warranted, and I hope that the complaints provoke significant improvements in the handling of sexual assault cases.

Prof. Timothy Burke has several thought-provoking observations about activism in a recent blog post. See “Outside the Classroom,” at http://blogs.swarthmore.edu/burke/2013/04/03/outside-the-classroom/</a> (I presume that links from university blogs are permitted on CC.) In the comments following the initial post, he wrote the following:

I hope that this semester was just an aberration.

Tim Burke is a big supporter of what we’re going in terms of Title IX and Clery Complaints. He’s going to be writing a new blog post about it soon.
