Regarding Major

Hello,

I am a senior and I was recently accepted into the College of William and Mary. When I applied, I applied as a Finance major (in the undergraduate business school). Since then, I have changed my mind and am now considering Economics as a major (in the college of arts and sciences). Would there be a great problem in switching between the two? And when will I be able to officially declare what major I am doing?

Thanks.

Hi there - I have two sons who attend WM. WM does not accept you into a major. And, actually getting into the business school is something you try to do (apply to) once you reach your junior year or end of your second year. Note that not everyone who applies to the business school gets in.

Hope this helps!

you can officially decide whenever you want, but if you want the business school, you have to apply and be selected

Ditto per above. It doesn’t really matter what major you put on your common application (it doesn’t really count except for them to gauge your interests), most students don’t officially decide until sometime during their second year (or for some students their first year) although you can declare if you have between 39-54 credits. A typical course is worth approximately 3 credits and any AP/IB credits count towards this total. If you have something like AP Psych or AP US History, it may actually be worth 6 credits.

But in any case, you should be fine with changing your major to econ, you don’t even have to contact the admissions office about it. The change of major is a relatively fluid process. Just note that if applying to the business school you must take the appropriate prerequisite courses and apply.
