Regarding the Presence of Religion

I realize there is a similar previous post asking about the presence of religion at Marquette and I understand that it is by no means oppressive. I am however transferring from Purdue and was wondering if the student culture is drastically different. For example, is the number of students who practice their faith strictly overwhelming compared to student who are more lax in that area? I'm just curious because I'm not sure how different I should expect the student body to be, never being part of an institution with a religious affiliation. Myself, I'm Jewish however I don't consider myself religious in the least so I don't want my values to clash too much which I'm sure they won't, I'm a pretty easy going guy, haha. Thanks in advance for any insight!

BrewPack – My daughter goes to Marquette, and her boyfriend goes to Purdue, so she knows both schools very well.
There are obvious differences between the two places (urban campus vs. spread out, “college town” campus; 8,000 kids vs. 30,000), but I don’t think the religion issue is anything to worry about. Marquette identifies itself as a Catholic, Jesuit school; you will see Christian iconography around; there is a very active campus ministry and worship opportunities for those who want them; and you will take two theo classes and two philosophy classes. But for many, many Marquette students, it is not at all a part of their daily lives – not at all. People don’t run bible study in their dorm rooms or anything like that.
My daughter would probably say you will find Marquette kids are “preppier” than Purdue kids, for what that’s worth.

It is not oppressive, but there are reminders that Marquette is a Catholic University. They do like to remind everyone that they are a Jesuit school and they promote social justice. Personally, I don’t see how a Jesuit school is different from any other Catholic or Christian school that encourages its students to work for social justice and helping out others.

If you like going to school on an urban campus where everything is close by, you will like Marquette a lot.
