I guess we really pay so much attention to rewards. Genuinely, I feel that what really counts is how many people you helped or lifted up. What did u do today for the Environment … but we get in this mad rush on counting these not so real rewards of being human.

The research behind these projects can take several months to a year. Among the winners, it is often work that is at the level of an undergraduate upperclassmen and sometimes higher. I am extremely proud of the work my son has done, as are the professors that mentored him.
And by the way, not everyone who did great work will get recognized. Judging is imperfect. The project my son submitted last year for ISEF couldn’t even get past the local competition, but it was just accepted in a major research journal. But the recognition does feel good when it comes.
And by the way, some of them are about how to improve the environment as well.
I agree with @hebegebe. A scientist is just as much of humanitarian as any other volunteer or charity worker is. All our ideas come from the fact that we want to help the world in one way or another - environment, health or otherwise. And if this award will help me get into a school where I can improve my skills as a scientist - then why not. I worked for almost 3 years on a concept which I know will bring a positive impact to people’s lives and this award propels me forward with my mission. I really don’t care for all the haters!

@hebegebe. Congratulations!! Are you on the east coast? I suppose all east coast calls must be over by now.
Not saying anything more beyond this point. Down to 40 people, so anything more would blow the Confidential part of this site.

My son received a call yesterday as well. Very excited for him and congrats to ALL the scholars and finalists. So nice to see our kids recognized for their hard work. I keep thinking his senior year will slow down at some point
