Regional College Information Sessions (lots of links)

Hi, everyone,

Many years ago I began attending National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC) National College Fair

<a href="http://www.nacacnet.org/MemberPortal/Events/CollegeFairs/%5B/url%5D">http://www.nacacnet.org/MemberPortal/Events/CollegeFairs/</a>

events, as research for a writing project. Three years ago at the Minnesota National College Fair, my son and I were invited at one college fair booth to attend a specific college-specific regional information meeting at a later date that year. That was my first experience with college regional information sessions, which I have found to be very informative and a good supplement to college fairs.

I have been compiling bookmarks about regional college information sessions since then, and I'll share them here. I hope you find the session about the college of interest to you informative and valuable. Some prospective students travel out of state to attend regional information sessions--that's still less expensive than traveling to the college, in some cases. Some regional events already happened in August in some parts of the country, and a few Web pages are not yet complete with a full schedule of fall 2006 meetings. If you know of other Web links like this, feel free to share them in replies to this thread.

Exploring College Options

<a href="http://exploringcollegeoptions.org/%5B/url%5D">http://exploringcollegeoptions.org/</a>

Exploring College Options is a consortium event of Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn, and, beginning this year, Stanford. This event travels to more cities than any one of the colleges does solo.

<a href="http://www.ctcl.com/events/index.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.ctcl.com/events/index.htm</a>

Colleges That Change Lives is a consortium event for about fifty colleges that travel together in what is a mix between a regional information session and a college fair.

Enjoy!

"tokenadult"

Thank you!

I've learned a lot at such meetings, so I encourage parents of college-bound young people to give them a visit.

Thank you tokenadult for compiling this list! Just getting ready to send one off this weekend and then it's time to start with our hs junior. We went to many of your posted info sessions when oldest was a senior, but want to start earlier with the next one since there's another hot on his heels the following year (and another one two years after that). I hadn't remembered that some of these sessions begin so soon into the school year, so your post has really reminded me to get my son to begin his search now!
Thanks again.

Tokenadult,

thanks so much for the listing I have already forwarded to a few people:)

1st post as a Senior. (I do have my AARP card)

I remember 5 years ago when I attended sessions with son for the various college road shows; Pretty much all the same: same families, same backgrounds, same questions, and same multimedia presentation. Parents always asked about FA, housing, safety. Kids were tag alongs. Now that son is an alumni, the school has asked him (via form letter) to field questions at the roadshow. Great idea, wonder why it wasn't done before because prospective students have vastly different questions than do parents.

So if you attend a session, I hope that there will be a breakout session for the parent and one for the prospect.

thank you so much for putting this together!

Does anyone know if I've missed any of the schools in the CC top schools lists that have regional information sessions?

A local friend just emailed with the Web page for another consortium of traveling colleges

<a href="http://www.southernconsortium.net/%5B/url%5D">http://www.southernconsortium.net/</a>

which, alas, does not include schedules on its Web site, but does include contact information for getting schedules.

I'm bumping up this old thread because both the Exploring College Options consortium

<a href="http://exploringcollegeoptions.org/%5B/url%5D">http://exploringcollegeoptions.org/</a>

and the Colleges That Change Lives consortium

<a href="http://www.ctcl.com/events/index.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.ctcl.com/events/index.htm</a>

have posted their new schedules for fall 2007. Please let me know what you think about any regional information sessions you attend in your area.

Here are links that are updated from last year's list:

Other colleges should be updating their pages about regional information sessions in the next month or so.

Tokenadult:

I looked up the Stanford link as we'd attended a local info session a few years ago. It looks like the fall dates have not been set yet. The info session we attended was held in October.
Beside the ad rep who presented a slide show and fielded questions, there was the parent of a student currently attending who discussed practical issues such as travel to and from CA from MA, clothing, housing, and such. He was very enthusiastic about his child's experience and generated a lot of interest among the audience of parents and students.

Hi, Marite, thanks for the description of the Stanford session you saw. Yes, a parent presenting adds an extra perspective to the program.

I'll try to update this thread from time to time as the various colleges update their Web pages on their regional information session programs.

The Big 10 schools have recruiting receptions in a number of cities. Next year schedule not up yet. 2006:

Prospective students and parents are invited to meet with the admissions directors from the public universities of the Big Ten. Each reception will feature a presentation on the participating universities, and students will have the opportunity to talk with admissions directors about the college admissions process, financial aid and more. Receptions will be held throughout March and April in Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. To learn more and to RSVP, prospective students should visit <a href="http://www.admissions.umich.edu/prospective/bigten.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.umich.edu/prospective/bigten.html</a>.</p>

and
Big Ten Reception
On April 15 the universities of the Big Ten will host a reception in New York City, where high school students and their families can meet with admissions directors of these world-class institutions. The event will feature a collective "Big Ten" presentation as well as the opportunity to ask questions of any or all of the universities.

New York Big Ten Reception

1535 Broadway on Times Square
New York City
College Fair: 2-5 p.m.
Presentations: 3:15-3:45 p.m. and 4-4:30 p.m.

As in the other thread, I appreciate you mentioning the Big Ten programs.

I'm glad we went to one of these, and wish we had attended more. S is now a student at this college. He never got to visit colleges, but the slide show and comments from alumni were helpful. It made writing his essay, "Why ____?" easy to write. (My S decided 2 days before winter break to apply while a junior, so plans to explore and visit schools went by the side.)

Post #17 gives one of several good reasons to go to college information sessions, and a good reason for going at a younger rather than older age.

Sorry if this is sidetracking the thread but I agree with starting the college search early. One of my Ds is in a special program which brought her to a college fair as a freshman. While there she picked up info and sent in cards for several and that's how we got started. It was University of Portland that made the biggest impression on her and we went last spring to a regional info session they put on. Everyone commented that we were starting early, but living in the rural area we live in w/ just a few campuses in a 4 hour radius it was wonderful to start early so as to plan vacations and days off work around college visits. I think that the kids in our area who start late in their Jr. year are at a disagvantage. Most end up at Chico State, Sonoma State, Humboldt State or Scramento State. Those are all fine schools but I am a big fan of options and I think our rural kids don't get a chance to see all of them unless they start early.

Nothing to be sorry for. That's what I like about regional college information sessions or college fairs. They get a high school student started on thinking about college, without having to travel to lots and lots of college campuses at first.
