Are incoming freshmen suppose to already be registering for classes, or is that until MOO (September)?

I'm pretty sure you don't register for classes (other than your first-year seminar) until after you've met with your first-year advisor (during orientation).

i figure they'll send off some sort of letter about that stuff in a few weeks' time

oh, ok

that's what I figured, but I looked on the catalogue and I kept seeing how many open seats were left, and it freaked me out because they were dropping

Numbers were dropping because current students registered a week or so ago. The numbers will keep fluctuating because it's now add/drop period for us. Freshmen, however, don't register until orientation, like arcadia said. So take a look through the catalogue and pick out some classes you'd like to take, but don't really worry about classes until you get here.

They reserve a certain number of seats in each class for freshman so don't even bother looking at those numbers. Freshman registration is an interesting process. Unlike for the rest of your registrations at Middlebury, which are done online, freshman registration is done in person. Once you get to Midd, you'll meet with your adviser during orientation week, get a randomly assigned number, and then you go into the gym and there is a table for every class and you register. It's quite the process, looking back on it now. :-)
