Regular Decision 2014/1018 Discussion

3.8/4.1, 34 ACT. Dean’s scholarship. Feel free to look at my other posts for a full info! Accepted: U Mich, UCSD, Brandeis. Still waiting for a couple others, but right now it’s be between UCSD and Michigan.

The sexual assault cases at Occidental and their vast failure in dealing with the situation has been brought to my attention again. Though Oxy is a great school, both academically and within their community, I’m unwilling to attend a school whose administration attempts to cover a situation as serious as rape allegations.

The Oxy issue is more complicated than stated above. The LA Times reporter who wrote the story about possible sexual abuse cases was fired earlier this month for making inaccurate allegations and engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a person providing him info about the story.

We loved our tour and everything else about Oxy but I am just now learning about the sexual assault scandal. Nothing I read seems to be objective on either side. Can anyone point me to an objective forum or report on this? I know this is a problem on college campuses nationwide, and I would like to get a better idea as to whether Oxy is worse than others. Thank you.

Congratulations on all your acceptances. I’ve also heard a lot about Oxy’s rape issues, and it is quite concerning. However I just found out I got accepted into Brown, so I think I’m gonna choose the Ivy League education over the $50,000 Oxy wants me to pay

Has everyone who got accepted received their financial aid package?

I got in 8 days ago and still haven’t gotten my merit aid / FAFSA award.

@marshallmeyer12 On the bottom of my daughter’s acceptance letter there was a link to the financial aid award. Take another look and see if you missed it, otherwise I would suggest you contact them.

HI All,

I am a parent of a current female freshman and wanted to chime in about sexual assault and financial aid. First, Oxy is definitely dealing with the sexual assault issue. A lot of parent orientation dealt with this matter and I feel the administration is really dealing with it. If you google any of your other choices, you will find out the rape situation is prevalent everywhere…where I went to school many years ago (a top East Coast LAC), has a rape rate of 1/3 female students. The difference between my alma mater and Oxy is the transparency of Oxy and student involvement. Oxy is not the only one in the news, so is Amherst, Dartmouth and a few others…Our daughter feels safe at the school and has received quite a bit of education from day one.

Oxy is very generous with financial aid and scholarships. Her original aid offer was generous…less than in-state tuition for us. Initially, she was awarded the Presidential Scholarship and than the Dungen over the summer. You can always appeal your financial aid decision and see if you get more. I think this needs to be done in writing.

Our daughter loves Oxy…it is closer to LA than Pomona etc. Lots of diversity, fun, and rigorous curriculum. Very politically active student body…It is an amazing place. She chose it over eight other schools.

Thanks for the help, guys. I got so much aid that it’ll be cheaper than all of my friends going to state schools!
