I got denied from Cornell ED yesterday, so now I am looking to apply to some other schools. I've been accepted to my safeties, and will hear back from Michigan soon, so I am looking for schools that would be good matches/reaches for me.

I want to major in computer science, so a school with a great reputation and CS department would be ideal. I also do not want to attend a small LAC because I prefer large schools and the diversity they offer.

I'm looking at schools such as USC and Northwestern, but I don't really know where to look after that...all help is appreciated!

OH Student

3.9 GPA
2100SAT/32 ACT
750 MathII & Physics
Great EC's including varsity swim team captain, heavy theatre involvement, and work experience

Are you 100% sure that you have ALL COSTS covered for your safeties?

If not, then those accepted schools aren’t safeties and you’ll need to find a couple of real safeties? (A safety isn’t a safety unless you’re CERTAIN that you have all costs covered.)

What are your safeties? (so we know what schools you like)

What is your home state?

How much will your parents pay?

Have your parents run the NPC’s on schools’ websites to determine aid?

NU and USC are reaches, but fine to apply to.

Once we know the answers to the above questions we can give better suggestions.

are you planning on swimming for anyone? have you contacted any coaches?

the worrisome piece is that 2100, if you can believe that, given the schools being bandied about. except for OSU, which could definitely be a safety and a very good school. and it certainly is large enough. I suggest you apply to OSU.

Here are some very good compsci programs that aren’t quite as difficult to attend as the above ones: UIllinoisUC, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, UCSanta Cruz.

Should be “If he is considering Michigan knowing how much it costs, …”. Lots of students seem to have application lists made up with no concern about cost, only to find that most or all of the admissions in April are too expensive.

Re: #6 and UC Santa Cruz

All of the California public universities’ application deadlines for frosh admissions have passed. This may be an issue at other schools or scholarships as well. It is really getting late at this stage to be looking for schools to apply to.

Maybe look at Santa Clara as a match - nice campus, access to Silicon Valley companies and you would be likely to be one of the better students.

I’m going to assume “accepted to my safeties” means either tOSU or Miami U, both good schools.

The Net Price Calculator on UMichigan estimates about 50k per year…I never really considered the extreme costs. I can probably afford ~25k per year.

You have the money? Or are you hoping that your parents will pay that amount? Please ask your parents how much they’ll pay so that you know for sure what your budget is.

Also, have your parents run the NPCs on schools’ websites, including CWRU.
The CWRU merit will get applied to “need”. So, if you have a need of $25k, then that scholarship will cover most of that “need”.

So here it is December and you haven’t had the talk with your parents about what schools cost and what they’re going to be expected to pay? So you need to hurry up and get this done this week. Be patient with your parents, however. It’s going to take them some time to realize what your going off to college will mean to their budget. But get those figures so that you can know whether or not your dreams have any relation to reality. There’s no point in asking about any more schools if you cannot afford them. You might think this sucks, but better to have this conversation now than to find out the end of March that you’re not going to any of these schools to which you’ve applied. Many families wait til then to have their epiphany. Don’t you be one of them.

out of state public universities will be the most expensive (since financial aid is mostly reserved for their own in-state students and they tack on extra fees for OOS students).
out of state private universities/LACs will be less expensive since you’re likely to qualify for merit money or a nicer financial aid package, especially if you live 400+miles away.
in-state public universities may be the cheapest but it depends on the state and what scholarships you qualified for (many application deadlines were Dec 1 )
in-state LACs will probably give you a decent scholarship too
in-state private universities are likely to be more expensive unless you qualify for merit aid (like at Case Western Reserve).
Try to find 2 schools in each category and run the Net Price Calculators, then show the results to your parents.

Deadlines are approaching for competitive schools that offer good packages.

For CS consider
Johns Hopkins
University of Rochester
RPI

Of course I hope that CMU and MIT are on your radar.

If you can do around 31-32K, a great option is the University of Waterloo in Ontario. They have one of the largest computer science departments in North America. University of Toronto is also comparable.
