I just got my decision letter from Union College in Schenectady, NY, and I was rejected. Quite honestly, I was surprised when I was rejected because I thought this was the "easiest" school to get into of all the schools I had applied to. I am not too sad, but it did lower my confidence VERY much...

I am in the top 10% of my class, have SAT scores above the 75th percentile marking for Union, have an abundant amount of ECs, and I do not think my essays were okay (although I did not spend much time on them).

Did anyone else receive their letters? Does Union look for something more than the tangible?

I guess it's my fault for underestimating the school, but nonetheless, I am still curious as to why I was rejected.

ComeGraduation, I am in that EXACT position!!!

I feel like if I cannot even get into Union (which allegedly reportedly accepts upwards of 70% of applicants) I don’t have a PRAYER of getting in to any of my more selective schools…i actually cried overthis…it was my first rejection…i honestly feel like CRAP :(

I was rejected by Union as well. I kind of expected it, though, because Union seems to have a minimal financial contribution requirement for internationals which I cannot meet (I didn’t find out about it until after I’d applied). I was also rejected by Sewanee, which was, I thought, my safest bet.

College admissions are incredibly unpredictable, though. I got into Mount Holyoke and was waitlisted at UChicago So chin up! Don’t make the mistake of treating one college’s rejection as indicative of other rejections. Every college emphasizes the importance of the essay to a different extent, has its own supplement, looks for different characteristics and has different institutional needs. Seriously, do not think you’ll be rejected everywhere just because one college denied you.

Oh, and, even though I am loath to suggest it, you may have fallen victim to the infamous Tufts Syndrome if you really are overqualified for Union. Even though Union’s acceptance rate is nowhere near 70%. IIRC, it’s actually ~40%.

Out of curiosity, where else did you apply?

Union accepts about 40% of applicants. I sympathize with you both, but Union IS a highly selective school albeit not a Swarthmore or Bowdoin. ComeGraduation, you are one of hundreds of CC posters who are discovering that stats alone don’t tell the tale with admissions. The positive side of this is that posters who have received rejections from schools where they are statistically among the elite often receive unexpected acceptances from reachier schools. Hopefully, this will be your experience.

I am SOOOO scared for my other results. I am an international student living in the States who needs a lot of aid, so I need to get into “top” schools…

I did get into BC, Villanova, and some other schools so far. I also got waitlisted at WUSTL.

Hopefully, I will get into my dream school.

Ghost, I am not really sure if you were asking me or ComeGraduation which schools we applied to but I’ll answer anyway :)

ummmm: Columbia, Johns Hopkins (dream school), Upenn, Duke, Boston University & Union

I am also international & have good SAT scores and am in the top 1% of my graduating class
Thanks for all the encouraging words guys :)…I’ll keep you all in my prayers :)

It seems we’re all internationals. Good luck with the rest of your applications and don’t let the Union rejection get to you! I’m sure we’ll all find ourselves at great schools next year.

btw, I have a good friend who’s studying BME at Johns Hopkins right now, and let me tell you, she’s a normal human being I’m sure your application is being given all due consideration.
