Rejecting an ED

So I was planning on applying ED to Brown, but I also wanted to apply to Yale. I really don't know which school I'd chose over the other, so by some slim chance if I do get accepted to both (Because I will be applying everywhere else before I get my ED decision from Brown) can I reject Brown with some money penalty or something and go to Yale? (Or any other school for that matter). I know that ED is binding, but they can't kidnap me and force me to go right? :-)

If you get an ED acceptance, you have to immediately withdraw your other applications, and also turn down any rolling admissions or EA acceptances you’ve received.

Colleges do share with competing colleges the lists of their ED admitted students, so if you are accepted ED to Brown, Yale will not accept you. Top colleges don’t want to admit students who don’t stand by their word.

Oh, okay. Thanks for clearing that up, now I’m going to have to give a lot more thought to applying ED.

Binding means binding. If you get accepted to your ED school and choose not to go there, you are breaking a contract. Colleges honor other colleges’ early decisions, so Yale will probably think poorly of you for breaking your ED agreement with Brown, and therefore, they will reject, as most competitive schools would.

You should only apply ED if you are sure that the school is your number one choice
