Religion in supplemental essays

For UVa and Tufts, they both ask to describe the community you grew up in.

Part of what I wrote a few sentences on was religion. I'm a Catholic turned (at a young age) non-demoninational Protestant while most people are my school are Mormons or atheists followed by a strong Catholic minority. I'm not debating religion openly here, but basically I'm saying part of being in my community now is friends of different religions where we can actually discuss this and debate religion, purpose, creation, etc.

Is it too risky to include religion at all, even by stating I'm a minority Protestant here? Or is this a useful insight into the people I grew up around?

No, I think that is fine as long as you aren’t speaking negatively about any group (religious or atheist). I think it could be insightful if you reveal something about yourself or show how you overcame an obstacle through your essay. It sounds look a good topic to me because it seems like you are open and willing to discuss other ideas with your friends which is a quality that many colleges may appreciate.

I talked about Judaism in my supp and got in so I think your fine. Just don’t be negative towards other religions and you’ll be fine.

Not at all.

Yes–assuming that’s how you used it in your essay.

Thanks everyone!

I’m doing it and hoping for the best. Good luck! :)
