I'm considering going to Vanderbilt next year (I've already applied Early Decision), and I was wondering how religiously diverse Vanderbilt is. I'm agnostic, and so I was wondering if I would fit in with people at Vanderbilt, for instance if the majority of the people are very religious.

I also applied ED, so good luck! I visited last spring and from my experience Vandy was very accepting and warm to religion without being a religious school. There is certainly no pressure to be religious. There is also a wide variety of diversity: Christian, Bhudist, Jewish, Agnostic, Athiest. Everyone seemed very respectful.

Thanks so much Zamar, and good luck to you too. I used to live in Nashville when I was younger so I know I like the area, I just haven’t ever been to the Vandy campus before so I wasn’t sure about what its like there. Again, Thanks!

I am a freshman this year and I can assure you that there is great religious diversity among the student body. There is certainly no pressure to be religious or anything along those lines, and nobody with think any less of you because of your beliefs.

Thanks so much SwigSash, I was worried about that. I come from a pretty religious town, so I have had to deal with people thinking less of me. Its nice to know I won’t have to deal with it at Vandy if I get in.

There was an article in the WSJ about Vanderbilt looking to attract a larger Jewish population shortly before my S was admitted ('02). At that time, Vanderbilt committed to build a Jewish deli on campus and I believe they were successful in this as one of their diversity goals. Somehow the myth that they continue to want to increase the Jewish population lingers on this board. Both of my kids had a number of Jewish friends and I don’t think the campus lacks for a Jewish population at this time.
