Apps are all due in a couple days for RPI regular decision.
Discuss your expectations, majors, how high Rensselaer comes on your list, concerns, and chances for regular decision in this thread.

I wanted to pm reply you, but apparently I don’t have enough posts to do so!

I plan to major in computer science and although I have an older sibling in college who’s pretty familiar with the whole college course selection process, it’d be pretty helpful to get info from someone at RPI. At the moment, I’m curious about residence. I’ve been to RPI before, I was there the past summer for a camp and stayed at Cary Hall; which was supposedly decent for a freshman dorm…it was quite warm at the time with no A/C but I know during the fall and spring it’s temperate, and winters in upstate NY are actually pretty cold. I’m planning to visit again soon while classes aren’t in session to get another look at the other dorms, but I’d like to know your opinion…which house were you in? and how did you like it?

Thanks.

I am in Barton hall, which is the best dorm. It is a triple, buyt it has the best showers and AC. Th other dorms are ok. But Quad is all suites, which is really cool.

Barton being the best is debatable. I liked quad a lot more than Barton even though Barton was still mostly doubles back when I lived there. I particularly enjoyed the proximity to everything and not having to use a floor bath.

Just saying as a heads up, the deadline for regular decision to rpi is now February 1st

did they change it? I thought it was 1/15 and that my son had missed it by not planning his time well! Must go look at the website.

Ya they extended it

Yes, the RPI Admissions website now shows a February 1st deadline for Regualr Decision applications:

[Admission to Rensselaer :: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Admissions](Let's Get Started | Admissions)

I see that. Ok, just sent my son a message informing him of his 2nd chance.

I applied for GSAS. I submitted an artistic portfolio with my application.

I don’t know what to expect. I’m worried that I’ll get rejected, as GSAS has a very, very, very, very low acceptance rate (20% as opposed to 40%), and I literally couldn’t afford applying ED. It’s a competitive program, and I’m worried that my transcript might not be strong enough. I think my essay was pretty good, though, and the fact that I submitted a portfolio (even though it included no programming examples, as I have none to show off as of yet) could help me because the people at GSAS like seeing the optional portfolio in an app.

RPI is my top-choice school–no doubt about it. I loved it so much the first time I visited that I went back for an Open House back in October. However, I’m afraid that this might’ve gotten lost in translation because I applied RD and not ED.

QUESTION: Does anyone know if RPI will admit you to the institution itself if you are rejected from your major, or would they reject you entirely upon being rejected from your major? Some schools will do the former.

My DS applied to RPI. He was really impressed with the academics and career opportunities when he visited. The daughter of a family friend, who is a current RPI senior, was able to show us her chem lab, so we got an inside look as well as the entire visit day for prospective students. When do RD decisions come out? Do you get an email or do you have to check your application status online?

Based on last year it was March 10 or 11 and decisions came online. Some reported email coming telling them to check their online account.

Thanks for the info. I couldn’t find it on the RPI website yesterday.

March 9th they send out acceptance letters

can’t wait, RPI is my number one choice right now, hope I can go

I’m somewhat worried about my admission chances. I sent my application in January 15 via the common app. Common app said everything was downloaded by the college. However, when I checked my application status on the RPI site, it said that my transcript and recommendation were still needed. At first I just figured it was no problem and that they simply hadn’t processed everything yet. However, I kept checking and just today I noticed that the site now says my transcript and recommendation were received on the 20th of February. The deadline was 2/15, I submitted 1/15, but technically was not complete. I am just wondering if anyone thinks this will count against me? Like I said, the common app said everything had been downloaded by the college way before this. I’m just a bit worried. I actually sent an email to admissions a couple weeks ago asking if they had my items and if I should just send these items again. I never got a response.

SaiyanMater: If it says everything is complete now I’m sure you are fine but you can always call their admissions office if you want to be reassured! :)

Does RPI every send out early accepts to some applicants? Son was just accepted to Northeastern honors program way ahead of their posted decision release date! I’m wondering if RPI ever does something similar?

If I remember correctly, in the past, if RPI states that Regular Decisions will be released on March 9, then everyone hears on March 9.

Saiyan master, RPI just sent an email today that they had caught up and please go omlne to check the check list.

One week to go!

It’s going to be a long week.
