rent vs buy textbooks

this will be my first one going to college- can someone tell me the pros and cons of buying or renting text books- thanks and which sites are best for price/shipping etc...customer service

My rule of thumb is to buy the textbooks in your major field of study. They will are the start of your professional library.

Used books are OK for the general ed and classes outside your major. I recommend used books over renting. If you damage the rental books in any way I would assume (as I have never rented any books) that you either pay a fine or have to replace the book (at full price). Once you are thru with your used book, if it is still in good shape, you can always sell it back (at a lower price than you bought it for sure).

My daughter likes to keep many of her books.

Buying on-line can save lots especially on older editions. If it is a brand new edition, you are kind of stuck. I use abebooks.com and amazon.com mostly, but there are many out there.

chegg.com is another renting-site out there…haven’t used it yet but you can check it out!
