I have attended a private school since freshman year and I am deeply considering transferring to another private school to repeat junior year. I don’t have horrible grades, but I could use the GPA boost of another year. Tuition is also not a problem for my family. We are mainly concerned on the effect this would have on the way colleges viewed my application. Since I don’t exactly need to repeat this year would it still be ok if I did? I know the added benefits of another year to prepare your application, log volunteer hours, and collect leadership opportunities. However do colleges frown upon students who do this? I have personal social reasons for repeating too: I don’t want my senior year to be virtual due to corona and I want more of a high school experience than I received at my old school. Any advice on this subject would help so much!
It depends on where you repeat and why. Many students who hope to be athletic recruits and who transfer to rigorous boarding schools in 11th repeat can say they wanted another year to get bigger, stronger, better at their sport and that they wanted the full BS experience and that they had no trouble creating a very challenging academic schedule.
Colleges are fine with this because it’s purposeful. You will have a harder time if you simply want a do-over.
Rather than a “do over”, you could plan for a PG year.
