Someone sent me a private email about these 2 colleges, both of which my dd attended. (She graduated from Willamette in 09 and we think it is a fabulous school!) I have long since forgotten my old registration so I reregistered, but the new account doesn't recognize the old one. Feel free to contact me again at maryrcraigatsbcglobal.net.

I’m not the one who posed the original question to Geena, but my DD is a current junior and both Willamette and Tulane are on her list. She has already visited Willamette and liked it well enough (although I think she was more excited by Reed) She is practical and internship possibilities are important to her, as well as study abroad, strong international relations and Spanish. Other schools she plans to look at are Macalester, Carleton, Rice, Penn, G-town, American, Lafayette and possibly Uof Puget Sound, U of WA, and Western WA U, ( the latter two are in state) She has not yet taken the SAT, but she was 97th percentile on the PSAT without any prep and she is #1 in her class of 330 (probably tied with a few others as the school does no grade weighting) Any insight would be appreciated.

I’m the one who sent you the private message about Tulane and Willamette. Thank you SO MUCH for re-registering with College Confidential, just on account of my inquiry!!!

My daughter, a senior applying for Fall, 2010, has been accepted by both schools. Your daughter, several years ago, enrolled at Tulane, attended Willamette during the Katrina semester, then returned to Tulane. So I wonder, after all was said and done, how your daughter would now compare the two. For example, how did she find the work load, the commitment of the students, and the enthusiasm of the faculty? Did she find Willamette too small, or Tulane too big? If she had to do it over again, would she have enrolled at Willamette instead?

(PS: I’ll send you a direct e-mail too, but don’t mind if you wish to answer here, for the benefit of the person who posted just I did.)

I have been accepted to Willamette and Tulane also and I would love to hear your experience with both if you don’t mind, Geena53

I cannot comment much about Willamette, but I can about Tulane. I am an alum, and my D just finished her first semester. Just for background, she was accepted to USNWR higher ranked schools (WUSTL, for example) but chose Tulane because she loved what she felt while visiting and (no small matter) she got a full tuition scholarship. She is extremely pleased after her first semester. She has found the classes challenging, her peers engaging, and New Orleans fabulous. To be fair, she is in the Honors Program and so her classes tend to be small, and she was able to skip the large (well, relatively) intro classes because of AP scores. Still, I don’t think anyone would think Tulane is “too big” at about 1500 per freshman class. It is a significant research university, so that certainly makes it a different experience than Willamette, or Reed for that matter. I think a lot depends on what the student thinks they want to major in, and the kind of atmosphere they are hoping to experience. While I am a Tulane booster, I have often recommended LAC’s for students where it is clear that will be a better fit.
