i am from NY and basically everyone that i've talked to has never heard of WPI.
the only person that has grew up in boston.. i also have a friend in boston who says that he knows a bunch of people who went to WPI.

i am just wondering about the reputation and how job placement will be after college.

most of the colleges i have visited have some sort of a co-op/internship experience available to student. does WPI have any of these opportunities?
what type of companies recruit WPI students?

WPI isn't particularly well-known amongst most people outside of New England. I'm from Oklahoma, and the only person I know there who had heard of it was my differential equations professor at Oklahoma State University (where I was taking classes during high school). However, it is quite well-known in academia and industry; generally, tech companies respect WPI graduates.

As far as internships goes, WPI doesn't really offer a real co-op experience like other schools, though the (required) senior project is often done with a company, which is vaguely similar to a co-op (though it doesn't have to be).

Here is a list of companies who recruited WPI students at the Fall 2007 career fair:

Some of the most popular companies hiring WPI students include Raytheon, Bose, Boston Scientific, General Electric, John Hancock, Microsoft, Pfizer, Texas Instruments, and UMASS Medical Center.

WPI is very well respected in MA/New England and students are happy with their experience there. It is a smaller school and very project based. I know students currently attending, and they really like it. It is my belief that they have no problems getting jobs after graduation. WPI has some excellent humanities programs as well. Take a look at the school... it is a highly ranked National University. Graduating students can apply to study advanced degrees, or are able to continue their educations at other universities. My friend's son is currently studying at MIT after completing his undergrad degree at WPI.
