is that really true? Of all the UCs, Berkeley does have a reputation of being a grind, if not a little cuthroat. Is that just urban legend, or is it really a tough 4-year existence?

tough to get a good GPA but not tough to graduate

agreed. …

It’s actually somewhat tough to graduate if you’re in certain majors - notably engineering and the hard sciences.

However, the vast majority of majors are not difficult to graduate from. It’s practically impossible to flunk out of a ‘Studies’ major.

Flunking out is not really common, although changing major after finding some math or science course to be “too hard” is common (even if the student got a passing grade like a C or C+).

What do you Bears think of the Molecular Toxicology major in College of Natural Resources versus Cognitive Science in L&S? Son was admitted into L&S but is contemplating switching if that is possible. He is planning on going the pre-med route.

Doing pre-med does not require majoring in any type of biology.

If he wants a backup option in case he does not get into medical school (most pre-meds do not), [Cognitive Science job and career prospects](https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/CogSci.stm) are not that bad compared to other majors, and better than both [Molecular and Cell Biology](https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/MCB.stm) and [url=https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/IntBio.stm]Integrative Biology/url.

Thanks ucbalumnus for your input. Yes he understands that 70% of premeds end up not even applying to med school but nonetheless remains insistent. He also noticed the lack of career data in the College of Natural Resources. He is quite intrigued with the Molecular Toxicology major and I hope it won’t be difficult for him to switch from CLAS if that is what he decides. I think he was hoping cog sci was more like neuroscience. He was admitted to neuroscience at UCLA but has his heart set on being a BEAR! I just want him to have options and not be locked in. My top priority would be to pick a major that upon graduation is employable. I had hoped he would pursue engineering for this reason. I was curious in general with what is perceived as the difference in pursuing a major in the CLAS versus CNR. Is CLAS more highly regarded than CNR?

It appears that Molecular Toxicology is lumped in with [Nutritional Sciences](https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/NutSci.stm) in the career survey. Pay rates at the bachelor’s level for the various majors under this heading appear to be quite low, although unemployment is also low, relative to other majors in the survey. NR is much smaller than L&S, as are most of its majors compared to most L&S majors, so career survey data on NR majors often has insufficient information.

As far as prestige level of L&S versus NR goes, that is likely not relevant compared to the specific major.
